This was a very good take on social networking in my opinion. Danah Boyd made reference to social networks as "mediated property," which they very much are. We don't own Myspace or Facebook profiles, they are more like public property which is governed by the laws of the commonwealth.
The democratic beauty of these networks is they are not just governed by law, which would be the guidelines we agree to when we sign up, but also by the standards set forth by the community. Our peers moderate what we do, having the power to report our abuse, intervene themselves, or ignore it and allow it to become a norm of the networks culture.
This is a road block for the future of online organizing and advocacy on the web. In my own practice, I advise people to not be so leery about losing control of your message. We so often operate in a top down, bureaucratic environment, that we lose sight of when that type of structure is fitting. In the political and social justice worlds, I don't think it is.
