During the 2009 Massachusetts US Senate special election, I led new media for Congressman Mike Capuano’s US Senate campaign. I managed a team of 6 – 3 staff and 3 part-time volunteers – that built an online operation from the ground up, raising hundreds-of-thousands of dollars, and recruiting hundreds of volunteers within 11 weeks.
This was my first time leading new media for a high-profile race soup to nuts, developing the strategy and seeing everything through to execution. I like to say we had the best new media program that cycle, and often found our competition copying our ideas. We ran a completely grassroots campaign with little budget and a lot of resourcefulness. We leveraged free tools and widgets, and the voice of our outspoken supporters around the state, to create a viral campaign which built a strong statewide coalition to support our election efforts.
Though we lost the primary, our greatest win was having the opportunity to work for such an amazing and caring individual.
